Mt Garnet to Chillagoe via Lappa
Go to ‘Wheelbarrow Way’ #2 to continue your journey to ‘Chillagoe Cabins’
This begins with a 60km 4 wheel drive track, not suitable for caravans and should be attempted only in the dry season. A must for the enthusiast. Although there is nothing too difficult it would be advisable to travel with another vehicle and don't expect to average much more than about 25kph. Use odometer readings as an approximate guide between points of interest.
This road follows an old tramway and telegraph track, is level and goes through cuttings and around the sides of the hills. The views across the valleys are outstanding. Old railway bridges have been dismantled but the lovely old stonework remains.
This is often referred to as the Nymbool Track and begins just west of Mt Garnet on the Mt Surprise road where you will see a street sign on the right saying Nymbool Road.
(+17km) The Mt Cardwell turn off. Take the right fork. (+14km) A sandy creek crossing and on the other side is a place to take a break.
(+9km) The sign posted turn off to Emuford on the right.
(+19km) Sunnymount Station turn off on the left. (+1km) A 'T' intersection and a bitumen road. This is the Mareeba to Chillagoe road and ‘Chillagoe Cabins’ is about 55km to the left. Immediately on the right is the Old Lappa Pub.
